Activity: Install Git, Git Bash and curl
Install Git and Git Bash on your computer. Git Bash gives you a Unix-like command-line window on Windows, which you will use throughout this course for running scripts and commands. Estimated time: 10 minutes.
📋 What to do
- Stage 1: Install Git.
- Go to the Git download page and download Git for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Run the installer and follow the installation wizard.
- Git Bash is included with the standard Git for Windows installer. After installation, you can open “Git Bash” from your Start menu (Windows). On macOS and Linux, use the Terminal app, which already works the same way.
- New to Git Bash? These are the commands you will use most:
pwd # show the folder you are in ls # list files cd folder # enter a folder (cd .. goes up one level) mkdir folder # create a folder git status # see changed files git clone <url> # copy a repo from GitHub
Git is the version control engine; Git Bash is the command-line window you use to talk to it on Windows.
- Stage 2: Verify curl.
- Windows: curl is included by default in recent versions of Windows 10/11. You can also use the version bundled with Git Bash.
- macOS/Linux: curl is usually pre-installed. If not, install it with your package manager: on macOS,
brew install curl; on Linux, sudo apt install curl. - For more information, see the curl download page.
- Stage 3: Test your installation.
- Open Git Bash (Windows) or Terminal (macOS/Linux).
- Test Git by running:
git --version
- Test curl by running:
curl --version
- Both commands should display version information. If either says command not found, close and reopen the window and try again; if it still fails, re-run that installer.
- Take one screenshot showing the output of both
git --versionandcurl --version, and paste it into the Canvas text submission box.
📮 Submit
Submit on Canvas (1 pt) — graded on completion; your deadline is on the Canvas assignment.
Note: this page reproduces the activity instructions so you can find them again after class, and it is the version kept current — surveys, slide decks and helper links are updated right here. Submit on Canvas; the due date and your grade live there.
